What is the advantage for the patient?

Based on the technical characteristics of the implant, theoretically a visual field of 12° can be obtained. Statements concerning the attainable visual acuity were formerly based only on the technical characteristics of the implant and on the results of the animal experiments. Based upon these, a 10% sight is theoretically achievable.

With the chip, it should become possible again to move in rooms without another person’s help and to move freely. It is also conceivable tha objects and faces could be recognizable again. The question whether or not patients with a retinal implant will be able to read can only be answered after the results of the first clinical patient trial series become available

In a first step, only patients with Retinitis pigmentosa shall receive an implant. In case of success, the patient group shall be extended to include advanced age-related macula degeneration.
